Five Friends Drove to a Basketball Game in 1978 — They Never Came Home On the night of February 24, 1978, five friends from Yuba County, California drove to a college basketball game in Chico — and vanished. Days later their car was found abandoned on a snow-covered mountain road, seventy-five miles in the wrong direction, in perfect working order. Months later, four of them were found dead in the wilderness under circumstances no one can explain. The fifth was never found at all. This is the true story of Gary Mathias, Jack Madruga, Jackie Huett, Ted Weiher, and Bill Sterling — the case investigators call the American Dyatlov Pass. Their Mercury Montego was discovered on a remote Forest Service road in the Plumas National Forest with no signs of struggle. A witness reported silent strangers with flashlights on that same road that night. In June 1978, after the snow melted, Ted Weiher was found starved to death inside a Forest Service trailer despite ample food and heating supplies nearby — and Gary Mathias's sneakers were on the floor, though Gary himself has never been found. #YubaCountyFive #UnsolvedMystery #TrueStory #MissingPersons #AmericanDyatlovPass #Documentary #ColdCase #CaliforniaHistory
