Come inside our 80㎡ (860 sq ft) apartment in Xuhui, Shanghai, and see what daily life looks like for a local Chinese family of three. In this China Apartment Tour, I’ll show you our 20+ year-old residential compound, our kitchen, 6㎡ daughter’s room, multifunctional living room, bedroom, and two very different balconies. I’ll also share some everyday details that may be different from homes in the US and other countries — from Chinese kitchens and filtered water to firm mattresses, wooden furniture, and how we use our small space as a family. And there’s one bigger question behind this apartment tour: we love this home, so why are we thinking about moving? We’re considering a three-bedroom apartment because our daughter has taken over what used to be our home office, my husband no longer has space to practice saxophone at home, and we often have to fight over one small work desk.
