Hair fall: Causes, treatment options & prevention
Hair fall is a common issue but it is important to understand the difference between normal and abnormal hair fall. For example, losing around 75-100 strands of hair daily is perfectly normal and part of the natural hair growth cycle. However, if you notice excessive hair fall—such as clumps of hair or thinning that becomes more noticeable over time, then it could be a sign of hair loss that requires attention.
Many factors can trigger hair fall including androgenetic alopecia (genetic hair loss), telogen effluvium (a scalp disorder often caused by physical or emotional stress, illness), childbirth, hormonal imbalance and nutritional deficiencies etcetera.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Medications are commonly used to help control hair loss,. Oral treatments can also regulate hair growth in cases of genetic or hormonal hair loss. Moreover, nutritional supplements and medicated shampoos play an effective role in managing hair fall. In this video, Dr. Maria Syed, a Consultant Dermatologist, discusses the issue of hair fall in detail and provides expert insights on treatment and prevention.
