📕 The Plain Heat Library, a warm house all winter for less and a warm room when the heat goes out, written down: https://elisplainheat.netlify.app/?b=bundl...
Five quilts on top, a thin sheet underneath, and at three in the morning your back is cold. My English neighbor Walter slept that way all winter, while my grandchildren slept warm in an upstairs room with no furnace at all. In this video I follow how I found out why, and the nine plain ways I keep my own bed warm all winter with no heat. The biggest one is not on top of you. The cold comes from underneath.
In this video:
• Why a cold body in a cold bed stays cold
• Nose out, cap on, and wool socks
• The hot water bottle, the careful way
• Flannel sheets, and which one matters most
• The right order for your quilts, and tucking the bed like an envelope
• Moving the bed off the cold wall and away from the window
• Making the bedroom small, and turning the thermostat back at night
• What camping stores measure, and why it explains a cold back
• The wool blanket under the sheet, and quilts hung around the bed
Figures come from the British Medical Journal (2008), the journal Nature (1999), the NFPA, the U.S. Department of Energy, the CDC, the CPSC, ASTM and REI.
Safety first:
• Hot water bottles: hot water, never boiling, no more than two-thirds full, always in a cover, never against bare skin. Take it out before you sleep, and never use one with an electric blanket switched on.
• Never put heated stones or bricks in a bed.
• Keep candles out of the bedroom. Use a battery lantern or flashlight.
• Hand warmer packs: not on bare skin and not while you sleep.
• Plug electric space heaters straight into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip, keep them 3 feet from the bed, curtains and anything that can burn, and turn them off before you sleep.
• Electric blankets: follow the label, keep them flat, never fold or tuck them in, check the cord, and retire old ones without automatic shut-off.
• Never heat a room with a grill, a camp stove, a generator, or the kitchen oven or stovetop.
• Keep working carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside the bedrooms. If one sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.
• Ask for help moving heavy furniture. Hang quilts clear of lamps and heaters, with a generous opening for air.
• If your home will not hold heat, call 211 and ask about a warming center.
