When the power goes out in a hard freeze, you can't keep a whole house warm. Nobody can. But you can keep one room livable for three days without a generator and without burning anything, if you make the right moves in the first hour.
In this video I walk you through 9 steps, in order: what to do in the first ten minutes, how to pick the right room (and why the basement may be the wrong one for you), how to close it off with blankets, towels and plastic, how to use the winter sun by day and shut out the cold by night, how to build a room inside the room, how to dress and sleep in a cold house, how to warm your body from the inside, safe heat with no flame, and the hardest step of all: knowing when to leave.
You'll also hear what really killed the most people in the Texas freeze of February 2021 (it wasn't carbon monoxide), the room temperature the National Institute on Aging warns about for older adults, and the signs of hypothermia to watch for in yourself and the people you love.
Never heat your home with a gas oven or range, and never run a generator, grill, camp stove or car indoors or in a garage. This is general safety information, not medical advice.
