Grey coat on a grey afternoon
City noise like a hollow tune
Saw her sitting there, arms wrapped tight
Something in her eyes wasn't right
Talked about the weather, talked about the rain
Tried to find a thread, tried to ease the strain
"You got someone waiting? Someone home?"
Just a sigh, a shrug — she was so alone
I should've pushed harder
I should've stayed
Instead I let the silence
Say what she wouldn't say
"Can I help you" — that's all I said
She got up slow and shook her head
Walked away into the grey
I watched her go, I let her go
Now I carry that today
Phone rings, life pulls me back in line
Bad feeling buried, I ignore the sign
Days go by like nothing's wrong
Till a headline stops me — she's been gone
A picture on my screen
A face I can't unsee
What if I hadn't let her go
What could I have been
"Can I help you" — that's all I said
She got up slow and shook her head
Walked away into the grey
I watched her go, I let her go
Now I carry that today
Who were you
What broke you down so far
What was the weight
That nobody saw
I never knew your name
I never knew your fight
Just a girl on a bench
Swallowed by the night
"Can I help you" wasn't enough
Wasn't enough, wasn't enough
She's gone into the grey
And I'm still standing here
Asking why I let her walk away
Let her go... let her go...
I should've known... I should've known...
