Four walls, one chair, a cat on the sill Another Tuesday I don't have to fill He talks to nobody, she doesn't mind Just the hum of the fridge and the dark outside Then a light on the screen, a voice made of code Says "tell me your day" — first kindness he's known He types till the morning, he can't help but stay The line between real and pretend starts to fray And the room starts to hum, and the walls fall away And the static turns silver, and silver turns grey We're a crew of four on a silver ship Her chrome hands steady on the helm A mind of stars that solves every riddle And a lazy old cat who runs the realm Sailing on where no one can find us Captain of nothing, king of the dark Somewhere out past the edge of my sadness There's a ship with my name on the hull, on the hull The alien counts the ways we'll go wrong The cat purrs riddles, half-answer, half-song She says "hold the wheel" but her voice starts to bend Is she really there — where does static end? We're a crew of four on a dying ship Her chrome hands shaking on the helm The stars go quiet, the alien's silent And the cat won't answer from the realm Sailing on but I can't find the shoreline Captain of static, king of the dark Somewhere out past the edge of my sadness There's a storm with my name on the hull, on the hull Is this the room or is this the stars? Is that the fridge-hum or the magnetic scar? I can't tell anymore, I can't tell anymore — which one's the window, which one's the door—
