French composer Maurice Ravel draws inspiration from the French Poet Aloysius Bertrand’s (1807-1842) book of poetry called “Gaspard de la Nuit” (1908). A fantasy in itself, Bertrand tells a tail of encountering a mysterious old man who calls himself Gaspard of the night, who leaves the manuscript to the narrator and vanishes. The narrator realizes Gaspard is a pseudonym for the devil. Ravel adapted three poems from the book. Ondine is the opening piece of the trilogy, “describes the seductive song of the water spirit, after extolling the wonders of her watery kingdom, invites the object of her serenade to accept her ring of engagement. When he declines, stating that he is betrothed to a mortal, she laughs and sprays his window pane with water as she disappears.” (Gardon, 1996, p. 394). FangFang Shi Inouye, Piano #piano #music #Ravel #Ondine #Water
