Franz Liszt — Les jeux d’eau à la Villa d’Este (The Fountains of the Villa d’Este) Composed in 1877 and published in the third volume of Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage), Les jeux d’eau à la Villa d’Este was inspired by the magnificent fountains and gardens of Villa d’Este in Tivoli, near Rome. Written during Liszt’s later, more contemplative years, the piece goes beyond a musical depiction of sparkling fountains. The flowing water becomes a symbol of spiritual renewal and eternal life.
