How the 1940s Changed Jewelry Forever - A Century of Luxury & Legacy - Doug Meadows - 06-14-2026

Week 24 - In this episode of A Century of Legacy & Luxury, I take a look back at the 1940s and 1950s—and how those decades changed the jewelry industry, our country, and families like mine. The 1940s were marked by war, sacrifice, rationing, and uncertainty. Metals and materials were difficult to get, jewelry production slowed down, and jewelers had to become creative. For many, service and repair work became an important way to keep their businesses going. Jewelry also became a meaningful way to remember loved ones through sweetheart pieces, lockets, victory pins, service flags, and other keepsakes. Then came the 1950s. Soldiers returned home, families grew, suburbs expanded, and there was a renewed sense of hope and celebration. Jewelry once again became part of life’s biggest moments—engagements, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, babies, promotions, and family milestones. I also share a little of the early history behind synthetic gemstones and the first lab-grown diamonds, including General Electric’s work in 1954. These ideas may feel modern today, but their story goes back much further than many people realize. Most of all, I reflect on my grandfather, my dad, and my uncles as they found their own way through those changing times—and how our family’s story continued in the jewelry business.
