Week 36 - What does resilience really look like when life or business knocks you down? In this episode of A Century of Luxury & Legacy, I reflect on our Character Core word of the month: Resilience. Over the years, I’ve learned that resilience isn’t pretending difficult things don’t hurt. It’s acknowledging what happened, making a new plan, and finding the strength to get back up. I share how we’ve worked to intentionally build a healthier culture at David Douglas Diamonds, some of the Scripture verses that speak to perseverance, and even what a tiny creature called a tardigrade can teach us about surviving difficult conditions. I also revisit one of the hardest moments in my business journey—the day the State of Georgia shut down my store over unpaid tax debt. I was devastated. I could have quit, but after regrouping, making some phone calls, shedding a few tears, and coming up with a new plan, we opened the doors again the very next day. Life gives all of us opportunities to practice resilience. Businesses fail. People get sick. Homes are lost. Relationships change. People we love pass away. We don’t always get to choose what happens, but we do get to decide what we do next. As one of my favorite quotes says: “It’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce back that counts.” Stay strong. Be resilient.
