Episode 5 of The Motocross Project UK takes me back to Mildenhall MX as I continue learning motocross in my 30s and work towards entering my first competitive race.
After taking a real confidence knock at VIP MX, I arrived at Mildenhall excited but slightly nervous. I’d ridden here a couple of times before, so I knew I was facing a very sandy motocross track with some huge jumps. This time, however, the goal wasn’t simply to chase the biggest jumps, it was to rebuild my confidence through better technique and more consistent riding.
After the first session, I set myself a clear target: lean the bike further into the corners, stay on the throttle and carry more speed through each turn.
The conditions certainly didn’t make that easy. The track was extremely wet during session one, began drying out during session two, and was then re-watered before session three, making it unbelievably slippery. As my cornering technique improved throughout the day, though, the difficult conditions gradually started to feel more manageable.
Mildenhall’s huge jumps were still the part of the track that gave me the most trouble, and nothing about the day felt particularly easy. However, I was happy with how I rode from the opening session and genuinely enjoyed getting back out on the bike.
This episode shows the honest reality of beginner motocross progression. Not every ride is about clearing a new jump or making a massive breakthrough, sometimes the biggest step forward is rebuilding your confidence, trusting the correct technique and becoming more consistent around the track.
If you’re learning motocross yourself, let me know in the comments: what helped you become more confident riding in wet or sandy conditions?
