What’s really inside a truck lease-purchase contract, and how can it bury a new driver in debt? In January 2025, a federal task force told Congress to ban lease-purchase agreements where the carrier controls a driver’s work, pay and debt at the same time. It called them “irredeemable tools of fraud and driver oppression”, and said it heard no evidence they were an important path to truck ownership. In this video, I take one illustrative lease-purchase contract and walk through it clause by clause. I show how the money moves each week, what happens when things go wrong, and what federal truth-in-leasing rules actually require. In this video: What a carrier-controlled lease-purchase is, and why it changes a driver’s legal status Clause 1: the truck’s price, and how $700 a week for four years compares with the truck’s market value Clause 2: the maintenance escrow, and the federal rules on accounting, interest and the 45-day return Clause 3: chargebacks, and what a good week really nets after fuel and deductions Clause 4: the bad week, when fixed deductions can turn a settlement negative Clause 5: dispatch, and why the right to refuse a load matters Clause 6: early termination, and how $91,000 could come due after 18 months of on-time payments What the C.R. England settlement and the Celadon collapse show about real-world risk Six questions to ask before you sign any lease-purchase contract CHAPTERS 0:00 January 16, 2025 1:29 What this video will prove 2:08 What a carrier-controlled lease-purchase is 3:37 Clause 1: The price of the truck 4:58 Clause 2: The maintenance escrow 6:50 Clause 3: The chargebacks 8:19 Clause 4: The bad week 9:25 Clause 5: Dispatch 10:27 Clause 6: When the lease ends early 12:00 The C.R. It does not represent any real carrier’s program. Real contracts vary widely. The C.R. England settlement was reached without any admission of wrongdoing.
