Jason Barnard walked out of a meeting in Paris with a €100,000 deal all but signed. Half an hour later, before his train got him home, the client emailed to cancel. They had searched his name. Google told them he was a cartoon maker.
Google was not wrong. He had spent years as the voice of Boowa the Blue Dog, a kids' TV character on Playhouse Disney with a website pulling a billion page views a year. All that lived in Wikipedia, IMDb, MusicBrainz. The digital marketer lived nowhere.
The trip cost him €1,000. He lost the €100,000. And on the train home he started working on the problem that became Brand SERP, and then became Kalicube: 25 billion data points on 73 million brands.
In this episode Jason gives me his entire method in 30 seconds, and then we spend the rest of the hour on the parts that are actually hard.
WHAT'S IN IT
• The 30-second version of the whole method: who you are, what you do, who you serve, why you're credible
• Your entity home, and why Google says out loud that it's looking for one
• Why ChatGPT said the same thing about Jason as Google did, on day one, with no extra work
• Flipping the funnel: start at the bottom, where you know exactly what people are asking
• Disagreeing with Rand Fishkin in public, and turning it into 19 articles for Search Engine Land
• Kalicube Pro: codifying your own brain and putting it inside the machine
• The AI due diligence rabbit hole, and the revenue leaking out of the bottom of your funnel
• "I want ChatGPT to do the boasting for me." A client's line, and a good goal.
• How Jason coins a term, and the glossary test that kills the bad ones
• Do you need a unique point of view, or is being very good enough?

Jason Barnard is the founder and CEO of Kalicube, a brand engineering company in the south of France. He coined the term Brand SERP, wrote a 19-part series on answer engine optimization for Search Engine Land, and hosts the Kalicube Summit.
Fernando Labastida is a marketing strategist, category designer, and author based in Austin, Texas. He coined "the one unforgettable idea" — the thing a founder does so naturally they've stopped noticing it's rare — and founded the Viral Genius Institute to excavate it and build it into the brand that buyers, Google, and ChatGPT cite.
Which of these have you actually done? Tell me in the comments.
