Nearly 12,500 feet beneath the North Atlantic, ROV Jason Junior explored inside Titanic. Seventy-four years after the sinking, its cameras revealed surviving details hidden beyond the wreck’s outer hull. Follow the real 1986 expedition led by Robert Ballard and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, as the crewed submersible Alvin carried a small, tethered robot to the ocean floor. Where Alvin could not safely venture, Jason Junior gave researchers a closer view. Through authentic expedition imagery, we examine the robot’s deployment, its views into Titanic’s interior, and the challenge of understanding a damaged ship through a camera in darkness. What remained recognizable? What could the robot reach? And what did those images reveal about the spaces people once occupied? This documentary explores a landmark mission in underwater archaeology, connecting the technology to the discoveries it made possible—and the human history preserved within the wreck. The expedition took place in July 1986. WHOI released a substantial collection of its archival footage in 2023.
