Nearly 16,400 feet beneath the Pacific, ROV Deep Discoverer investigated the interior of USS Yorktown. Eight decades after the aircraft carrier sank, its cameras revealed objects that raised an extraordinary question: what had survived inside—and why was it still there? Follow NOAA’s April 2025 expedition into the wreck’s shadowed elevator shafts and hangar spaces. From unexpected cargo to evidence of the ship’s final battle, each discovery reveals another part of a story hidden beneath the flight deck. This documentary follows the real mission, the robot that made it possible, and the clues researchers used to interpret what its lights uncovered. How could pilots examine the interior without becoming entangled? What could surviving markings reveal? And which questions remain unanswered? USS Yorktown (CV-5) sank in June 1942 following the Battle of Midway. Its wreck was discovered in 1998. On April 19–20, 2025, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer returned with ROV Deep Discoverer during the Beyond the Blue: Papahānaumokuākea ROV and Mapping expedition, revealing new details of this remarkable underwater historic site.
