And the one trophy every fan secretly wants their club to win — right up until the moment a bigger club enters the competition and makes it feel pointless again. Here is everything you need to know. *What is it?* The League Cup — officially the Carabao Cup since 2017, after the Thai energy drink that's been its longest-serving title sponsor in history — is English football's second domestic knockout cup competition, sitting alongside the FA Cup and the Premier League as one of the three major trophies in the English game. It was created in 1960 by the Football League as a response to the growing popularity of European football, designed to give clubs something meaningful to play for midweek under floodlights. It has been known by many names across its 66 year history — the Milk Cup, the Littlewoods Challenge Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup, the Worthington Cup, the Carling Cup, the Capital One Cup. The name changes. The trophy stays the same. *How does it work?* All 92 English Football League and Premier League clubs enter. The earlier rounds are single-leg affairs — one game, winner goes through. Clubs competing in European football enter in the second round rather than the first, giving lower league sides a better chance of a glamour tie before the big boys arrive. From the quarter-finals onward it becomes two-legged — home and away — until the final itself, played as a single match at Wembley in late February. Win it and you qualify for the UEFA Conference League the following season — which sounds modest until you remember that's exactly how Crystal Palace ended up in the Europa League this year. *Does it actually matter?* This is where it gets interesting. Top six clubs regularly field weakened sides in the early rounds, treating it as an opportunity for fringe players and youngsters. Pep Guardiola famously described the League Cup as his least favourite competition — and then won it eight times in a row. The prize money is genuinely tiny — £100,000 for the winners, compared to £2 million for the FA Cup. And yet when Newcastle ended their 70-year wait for a major trophy by lifting it at Wembley last season, nobody in that stadium was questioning whether it mattered. *Who's won it most?* Liverpool lead with 10 titles. Manchester City have 9 — including an extraordinary run of 8 consecutive finals between 2017 and 2024, winning 6 of them. Aston Villa have 5. Chelsea and Tottenham 4 each. And then there are the one-off winners that history remembers more fondly than many multi-time champions — Swindon Town in 1969. Oxford United in 1986. Rochdale reaching the final in 1962. Wigan Athletic in 2013, beating Manchester City 1-0 with a goal 91 seconds from time. *This season.* Arsenal go in as defending champions — beating Manchester City 2-1 in last year's final. City will want it back. Liverpool under Iraola will want their 11th. Bournemouth enter a major domestic cup as a European club for the first time in their history. And somewhere in League One or League Two, a club is about to have the run of their lifetime — a giant-killing that their fans will talk about for decades. That's the League Cup. Undervalued.
