How do you build one of the largest cruise ships in the world—and fit it inside a shipyard dock with almost no room to spare? In this video, we go inside Meyer Turku in Finland to uncover how Star of the Seas was transformed from a single numbered steel plate into a 364.83-meter-long floating city. From massive steel blocks and modular cabins to a 1,200-ton gantry crane, every stage of construction had to be planned with extraordinary precision.
We’ll follow the incredible engineering process behind this $2+ billion megaship, including the enormous floating engine-room module built in Germany and towed across the Baltic Sea, the keel-laying process, the dramatic float-out, months of interior outfitting, and the sea trials that pushed the ship’s propulsion and onboard systems to their limits. With six dual-fuel generator sets, three powerful Azipod propulsion units, twenty decks, and capacity for thousands of passengers and crew, Star of the Seas is less like a traditional ship and more like an entire city engineered to move across the ocean.
But perhaps the most remarkable detail is the size of the dock itself. Meyer Turku’s building dock is 365 meters long, while Star of the Seas measures 364.83 meters—leaving only about 17 centimeters of theoretical difference in length. Discover how that physical limitation shaped the design of the ship, why modern cruise ships are assembled like gigantic modular structures, and how Finland became home to some of the most ambitious shipbuilding projects on Earth.
