Sand science for kids: why won't Drip's sandcastle stand? 🏰 He flips his bucket and... the sand just pours out!
"Sandcastle Science" is a Dropples story for ages 3–6. Drip, Puff the invisible water vapour and Frost the ice cube play "Will the castle stand?" Dry sand or wet sand? A little water or lots? Left in the sun? Count the scoops, guess STAND or FALL, and shout the answer with them!
🖌️ Try it at home with a grown-up: fill three cups with sand. Leave one dry, add a little water to one, and add so much to the third that it puddles. Mix each one, pat it, flip it over onto a tray. Which castle stands?

👪 For grown-ups
A little water makes tiny water bridges between the grains of sand, and the bridges pull the grains together so the sand sticks. Dry sand has no bridges, so it pours. Soaking-wet sand has no air left in the gaps, so it slides. When the water evaporates (rises into the air as invisible water vapour), the bridges disappear, and a dried-out castle can crumble with one gentle touch.
Safety: Build with a grown-up nearby. Keep sand out of eyes and mouths, wash hands after playing, wear a hat and play in the shade on sunny days, dig only little holes (never deep holes or tunnels, and never bury anyone), and at the beach stay close to a grown-up and away from the waves.
Questions to ask after watching: Why did the dry sand fall? Why did two scoops of water work but eight did not? What happened when the castle dried in the sun?
