Director's Statement: A few years back, while at a girlfriend's birthday party, I started chatting with a woman and when the inevitable "so what do you do?" question came up, she revealed that she was a death doula. I had read about this radically compassionate practice, but never had a chance to speak with a practitioner, so with her permission, I proceeded to pick her brain about what this vocation entailed. But as she told me about this work, of arriving open-hearted into the thick of a family's worse nightmare— preparing to lose a loved one— what struck me most was how vulnerable these mostly women are making themselves in these situations, and how easily they could be exploited, coerced or worse by a ill-intentioned actor. This all dovetailed with my long standing conviction that when it comes to grief, the only way out is through, and further that any attempt to dodge or deflect the difficult process of grieving will only make the pain come back tenfold. For Amalia our death doula, the work of giving people "a good death" allows her to avoid confronting her trauma surrounding her own mother's "bad" one. But this tunnel vision of purpose means that she misses some clear red flags surrounding her arrival and work with Tabitha and Gertrude, and what eventually befalls Amalia is far worse than any healthy grieving process could ever have been.
