Why doesn't Hollywood make movies like The Firm anymore? In July 1993, a Tom Cruise legal thriller with no explosions, no superheroes and no sequel plans beat Jurassic Park over the July 4th weekend, then spent six straight weeks as the #1 rental in America. The Firm wasn't a fluke. It was how Hollywood made money. A big-star adult drama, built from a John Grisham bestseller with Gene Hackman and director Sydney Pollack, got paid twice: once at the box office and again at the video store, where every Blockbuster paid $60 to $70 a tape. Using Paramount's own SEC filings, Billboard's rental charts and the people who were there, this video essay follows that second payday from VHS to DVD to its collapse, and asks what really killed the mid-budget movie. Was it the end of DVD sales, Marvel and franchise films, marketing costs or Netflix and streaming? Matt Damon, Steven Soderbergh and Martin Scorsese all have an answer. The numbers tell a more complicated story. Then we test it: could a movie like The Firm succeed in theaters today, against Verity, The Housemaid, Weapons and Black Bag?
