An old carpenter shaves an old wooden board layer after layer, but the characters will not come off. Who wrote them? Sixteen hundred years ago, in the Eastern Jin dynasty, a boy called Wang Xizhi practised every day; legend says the pond where he washed his brushes turned black, his tracing finger wore through the front of his robe, and he learned the turn of the wrist from the necks of geese. He grew up to be called the Sage of Calligraphy. When the emperor asked him to write a prayer on a wooden board, his ink sank three fen into the wood — about as thick as a pencil — as the carpenter found when he tried to shave it off. Children learn the idiom 入木三分 (rù mù sān fēn: strong, forceful writing; also deep, sharp words), the character 墨 (mò, ink) and the word 书圣 (shū shèng), and read one short line from the ancient source.
