What caused the American Civil War—and why did the Union finally break in 1860–1861 after decades of compromise? Fort Sumter is remembered as the opening clash, but the road to war ran through slavery, westward expansion, sectional politics, failed compromises, secession, and a political system losing its ability to contain the conflict. This documentary traces that road from the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 through the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Bleeding Kansas, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, and the fractured Election of 1860. It examines Abraham Lincoln’s victory, the collapse of national political coalitions, the secession of the Deep South, the Confederate Constitution, the Crittenden Compromise, and the growing constitutional crisis over who actually held sovereign authority. At the center of the story was slavery—especially the struggle over whether it would expand into the western territories and how that expansion would reshape political power. But understanding why the Civil War began also requires separating the deeper structural conflict from the mechanisms that failed to contain it. Lincoln’s election became a political threshold. Secession was a political decision. Competing claims of sovereignty created an immediate crisis. Fort Sumter became the military trigger. And one final clue complicates the familiar story: even as the Union was collapsing, Congress proposed the Corwin Amendment, which would have protected slavery from federal interference inside the states where it already existed. Why wasn’t that enough to stop secession?
