Surrounded by the mountains of the Central Japanese Alps, it is one of Japan’s most spectacular scenic destinations. At an elevation of 2,612 meters, the view from the ropeway station is breathtaking. Towering mountains and rugged rock faces stretch out before you, creating a landscape that feels like stepping into another world. A “cirque” is a bowl-shaped landform carved into a mountainside by glacial erosion. Senjojiki Cirque is known as a landscape formed during the Ice Age. The name “Senjojiki” means a place spacious enough to lay out a thousand tatami mats, reflecting the vastness of this area. Rising behind the cirque is Mount Hoken, standing at 2,931 meters. Its rugged rocky peaks contrast beautifully with the gentler slopes below, creating the distinctive scenery that makes this place so special. In summer, a variety of alpine flowers bloom throughout the cirque. You can find plants such as black lilies, Japanese globeflowers, and mountain avens, all adapted to life at high elevations. These delicate flowers add splashes of color to the magnificent mountain landscape. Autumn is another wonderful season to visit Senjojiki Cirque. The bright reds of rowan trees, golden-yellow foliage, evergreen Japanese stone pines, and pale rock faces combine to create a spectacular display of color. To reach Senjojiki Cirque, take a local bus from the Komagane Kogen area to Shirabidaira Station. From there, board the Komagatake Ropeway. After an approximately eight-minute ride through the mountains, you will arrive at Senjojiki Station, at an elevation of 2,612 meters. Even without mountaineering experience, visitors can enjoy spectacular alpine scenery at an altitude of more than 2,600 meters. This is one of the area's greatest attractions. Walking trails around the station allow visitors to explore the area while taking in the magnificent natural surroundings. However, temperatures here are much lower than in the foothills, and the weather can change quickly.
