This is the Otaki Satomiya Shrine of Ontake Shrine, located in Otaki Village, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. Mount Ontake stands 3,067 meters tall. It is one of Japan’s most sacred mountains, and for centuries, the mountain itself has been revered as an object of worship. Ontake Shrine has a long history. According to tradition, it was founded on sacred Mount Ontake in 702. The shrine enshrines three deities: Kunitokotachi-no-Mikoto, Ōnamuchi-no-Mikoto, and Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto. Together, these deities are known as the Ontake Okami. Mountain worship has been practiced on Mount Ontake since ancient times, particularly by ascetic practitioners. During the Edo period, Ontake worship grew significantly. One of the most important figures in this history was Fukan Gyōja, who is said to have opened the Otaki trail to Mount Ontake in 1792. After Fukan Gyōja established the route from Otaki toward the summit of Mount Ontake, increasing numbers of worshippers from across Japan began visiting the mountain. As a result, inns, teahouses, mountain huts, and other facilities were developed in Otaki Village, greatly contributing to the village’s growth. The Otaki Satomiya Shrine is one of the important centers of this Ontake faith. Today, reaching the shrine requires passing through a torii gate and climbing a long flight of stone steps surrounded by towering cedar and cypress trees. There are more than 400 steps from the road to the shrine buildings. One of the most striking features of this shrine is the enormous rock rising behind the main shrine building. The shrine is said to have once been known as Iwato Gongen, and from around the late Muromachi period, it became one of the 38 shrines associated with Mount Ontake and attracted many worshippers. Later, during the Edo period, it served as a local shrine for Ontake-zan Zaō Daigongen, playing an important role as Ontake worship spread throughout Japan. Behind the shrine buildings, there is also sacred spring water flowing from the rock. This water has been selected as one of the “Famous and Secret Waters of Shinshu,” and it is a place where you can experience the rich natural environment of Mount Ontake. Continuing farther toward Mount Ontake, you will find many shrines, sacred sites, and waterfalls along the mountain trail. One of them is Kiyotaki Waterfall, which is known as a place for waterfall purification rituals. In other words, this is more than just a shrine. Here, Mount Ontake itself is revered as sacred. People climb the mountain, purify themselves beneath waterfalls, and offer prayers to the gods. This unique form of Japanese mountain worship is still alive here today. If you visit Mount Ontake, rather than simply aiming for the summit, I recommend starting here at the Otaki Satomiya Shrine and experiencing the history of Ontake worship. The path that begins here is also a sacred path, one that countless people have followed over the centuries on their way toward this holy mountain. #OntakeShrine #MountOntake #NaganoJapan #JapanTravel #JapaneseShrine #SacredMountain #HiddenJapan #JapanTourism
