In 1960, a teenage Duane Allman wrecked his Harley-Davidson 165 and traded the damage for a Silvertone guitar of his own. Eleven years later, a Harley-Davidson Sportster was waiting in Macon, Georgia. This motorcycle documentary tells the true story of Duane Allman, the slide guitarist who founded the Allman Brothers Band, from a Daytona Beach backyard to the Big House, the Fillmore East and a Friday evening on Hillcrest Avenue, October 29, 1971. Then it follows the eerie sequel: bassist Berry Oakley, his Triumph motorcycle, and a crash just three blocks away, a year and thirteen days later. Two bandmates, two motorcycles, one small Southern town, and a legend that still follows the band today. If you love classic Harley-Davidson history, real rider stories and the untold stories behind Southern rock, this one is for you.
In this video:
How a wrecked Harley-Davidson 165 became Duane Allman's first guitar
The road from Daytona Beach to Muscle Shoals, Macon and the Fillmore East
The Friday evening on Hillcrest Avenue, and what the Macon police reported
Berry Oakley, his Triumph, and the coincidences that became part of the band's legend
A note on sources: this story draws on contemporary Macon Telegraph reports and later published accounts. Where accounts differ, for example on whether the Sportster touched the truck, the video says so.
