A distillation column is the most common separation device in the chemical industry, and almost nobody has seen inside one. So I modelled a full 33.6 m column in 3D and cut it open.
We go through every internal in the order the process meets them: the 24 valve trays and how vapour and liquid actually move across a deck, the downcomers, the chimney tray, the structured packing bed, the trough distributor, the demister, and then the whole loop outside the shell: condenser, reflux drum, reflux pump, thermosiphon reboiler and the bottoms pump. At the end we compare sieve, valve and bubble-cap trays, trays against packing, and the main families of column you will meet in a plant.
Everything you see is modelled to plant practice, not artistic licence: 24 trays at 600 mm spacing, feed just above tray 12, real nozzle and valve arrangements, and every line terminated at something.

THE MODEL
The C-101 model in this video is available to license, and I take commissions for equipment models and process animations like this one. Contact details are on the channel's About page.
WHO I AM
I am a chemical engineer. I build these models to explain the equipment I work with, because a cut-away teaches in thirty seconds what a P&ID takes an hour to communicate.
NEXT
Thickener, tilting pan filter, sulphur recovery unit, and why most 3D plant models are quietly wrong. Subscribe if you want the inside of the equipment you work with every day.
