Every refinery and sour gas plant has one, and almost nobody outside the fence has seen inside it. A sulfur recovery unit takes hydrogen sulfide, lethal at a few hundred ppm, and turns it into solid yellow sulfur you can put on a truck. I modelled a complete 100 t/d Claus unit in 3D and walked through it, from the acid gas header to the top of the stack.
What you will see:
The reaction furnace, where one air rate decides everything: burn exactly a third of the H2S to SO2, because the Claus reaction wants 2 to 1
The waste heat boiler, and the process Carl Claus patented in 1883
Three catalyst beds with reheat between them, and the four sulfur condensers that are the classic failure point
The covered sulfur pit, degassing down to 10 ppm H2S, and heated tanker loading
The tail gas treating unit (hydrogenation, quench, amine absorber) that lifts recovery from 97 % to over 99.9 %
The incinerator, the 60 m stack and the SO2 analyser that is the plant's licence to operate

THE 3D MODEL
SRU-100 is built to plant practice: KO drums, a refractory-lined reaction furnace, a fire-tube waste heat boiler with its steam drum, a three-bed horizontal converter, a covered sulfur pit with pumps, a SCOT-type tail gas unit, a 90 m two-tier pipe rack and 85 lines, every one terminated at a real nozzle and audited: 0 dangling ends, 0 clashes. 843 objects, 690k vertices.
WHO I AM
I am a chemical engineer. I build these models to explain the equipment I work with, because a 3D model teaches in thirty seconds what a P&ID takes an hour to communicate.
NEXT ON THE CHANNEL
A tilting pan filter, a centrifugal pump, and why most 3D plant models are quietly wrong. Subscribe if you want to see inside the equipment you work with every day.
