Consort Nian: Did Yongzheng Wait for Her to Die? Consort Nian, the real woman behind Hua Fei in Empresses in the Palace, was the Yongzheng Emperor's highest-ranking consort. In December 1725, while he was destroying her brother, the general Nian Gengyao, Yongzheng raised her to Imperial Noble Consort and admitted in writing that for three years he had not looked after her. Seven days later she was dead. Less than three weeks after that, her brother was ordered to take his own life. We follow the edict, the dates and the historians who still argue over them: every child born to Yongzheng for twenty-one years was hers, the emperor was away at his father's tomb in her final days, and her coffin still lies inside his unopened tomb.
