What was supposed to be a straightforward storm drain repair at Walgreens in East Chicago, Indiana, turned into one of the craziest situations we've dealt with on a jobsite. We were hired to repair a collapsed storm basin that had created a massive hole in the parking lot. Our crew had already excavated the area and removed the heavy concrete sections when a city inspector showed up and shut down the entire job. The issue? We didn't have the required local permits, and we hadn't been informed they were needed for this project. Things escalated pretty quickly. The police were called, the possibility of getting arrested came up, and we were left with a massive hole in the ground, heavy rain on the way, and only a couple of hours of work left. After getting all the proper paperwork, permits, and contractor registration taken care of, we returned a few weeks later to finish what we started.
