Voluntary in G major by Henry Purcell performed by Ben Bloor in a live concert on the 37 stop meantone 1735 Bridge organ (restored William Drake 2011-2015) in Christ Church Spitalfields, London on Monday 17th July 2023. Henry Purcell stands alongside Sir Edward Elgar as one of the greatest English composers. His seminal work, the dramatic opera Dido and Aeneas was arguably the first of its kind, and thus incredibly influential. Purcell attended Westminster School and subsequently became organist of Westminster Abbey, until his death at the age of 36. This Voluntary in G major begins rather ponderously, seemingly feeling around for harmonic progressions in the dark, with the occasional gestural Lombardic rhythm, before launching into a brief but joyful canzona-like fugue. Ben Bloor is Organist at the London Oratory Church and School Organist at Westminster School.
