The middle asking price in Michigan is $290,000. So we went looking where your money still buys space: the old farm towns, the lakes, and the wild Upper Peninsula. In this video we count down 10 real homes with land in Michigan, from an 1870 Victorian on 5 acres with its own lake shoreline for $349,900, all the way down to an off-grid log cabin on 40 acres with its own Finnish sauna, for just $114,800.
Along the way: 110 acres with more than a mile of river and a purple 1908 farmhouse, an 1883 Victorian sold with its antiques, a house that began as a greenhouse for the family of the man who invented the flexible ice cube tray, a 1918 brick building with 20 bedrooms, a 1901 house from the town that once "steered the world", a log cabin you can only reach by snowmobile in winter, a log cabin with a spiral staircase and a hand pump at the sink, and an A-frame with 400 feet of shoreline on its own little lake.
For each one we look at why it hasn't sold yet, the price history, and what matters if you're planning to retire: stairs or one level, and how far the nearest hospital is. Plus: why Michigan is really two states, and the property-tax surprise that hits buyers the year after they buy.

⚠️ Disclaimer: All listings shown were found during our research and were active at the time (October 2026). Prices, availability and status can change quickly, so always verify directly with the listing agent before making any decisions. The property-tax figures shown are what the CURRENT owner pays, from public records. In Michigan (Proposal A), a home's taxable value is uncapped the year after it sells, and a home that isn't your main residence (a cabin or hunting camp) doesn't get the principal residence exemption, so a new owner's tax can be much higher; ask the county or township assessor before you buy. Some listings mention limited road access, seasonal (snowmobile-only) access, no bathroom, or unknown well, septic and solar condition; have everything inspected and check access and insurability. Square footage, history and other claims are as described in the listings. Map imagery: USDA NAIP / USGS. Archive images: Library of Congress and other public-domain sources.
