Some naval guns were strange because of their size. Others were strange because the entire ship had to be designed around them.
This video explains ten unusual naval gun systems, from Russia’s circular Novgorod and USS Vesuvius’s compressed-air battery to Kearsarge’s stacked turrets, HMS Agincourt’s seven main turrets, and HMS Furious carrying an enormous 18-inch gun.
It also covers HMS M1 and Surcouf putting battleship and cruiser-caliber artillery on submarines, Richelieu concentrating eight heavy guns forward, USS Hull testing the automated Mark 71, and USS Zumwalt’s Advanced Gun System losing the specialized ammunition it was built around.
Along the way, we look at why these weapons existed, what engineering problem each design tried to solve, how they performed, and why most of these unusual approaches disappeared.
