In this message from the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Tim Fleener continues in Matthew 6 and shows how Jesus’ command “Do not be anxious” is built on the previous teaching about treasures, eyes, and masters (verses 19–24).
Worry is not just an emotion—it is often a functional denial of God’s goodness, power, and parental care. Jesus offers a better way: a worry-free life that flows from seeking first the kingdom.
Key points:
1. Worry is uncharacteristic of the believer (little faith forgets who is in the boat)
2. Worry is unwise because of our future (God’s mercies are new every morning—don’t borrow tomorrow’s trouble)
3. Worry is overcome by a growing faith (shift focus from the storm to Christ, daily intimacy instead of crisis-only prayer, remember God’s past faithfulness, and walk through the storm rather than avoid it)
Jesus points to the birds, the lilies, David at Ziklag, the disciples in the storm, and Philippians 4:6-7. The peace that guards our hearts and minds comes through specific prayer with thanksgiving.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
