In this message from the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Tim Fleener unpacks Jesus’ teaching on true wealth: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” We live in a plastic world that constantly pushes temporary things. Jesus calls us to something better—using what we have now to invest in eternity. When a rich man is poor: 1. When he seeks satisfaction in money and the things it buys (Ecclesiastes 5:10) 2. When his wealth multiplies his troubles (Proverbs 15:6; 1 Timothy 6:9-10) 3. When he becomes a slave to his wealth (“golden handcuffs”) 4. When he has no treasure in heaven 5. When he dies without Christ (Luke 16 – the rich man and Lazarus) Five biblical ways to send your treasures ahead: 1. Doing good works and being generous (1 Timothy 6:18-19; Matthew 10:40-42) 2. Investing in your own spiritual growth (2 Peter 1:5-11; 1 Timothy 4:8) 3. Responding rightly when your character is tested by fire (James 1:2-4; 2 Corinthians 4:17) 4. Sowing to the Spirit (Galatians 6:8) 5. Using money as a tool to reach people for Christ (Luke 16:9) — building an eternal welcoming committee There’s nothing wrong with wealth. God gives good things for us to enjoy. The danger comes when we treasure the treasures of this world instead of using them for eternal purposes. “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” — Jim Elliot Real Life Church Helping people find and follow Jesus If this message encouraged you, like, share, and subscribe.
