West Bengal’s Rejinagar bypoll has taken another dramatic turn as Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, the candidate backed by Mamata Banerjee’s faction, reconsidered his earlier decision to withdraw and said he would contest the election. Earlier, Alam had cited concerns over the safety of party workers and difficulty in campaigning with the faction’s newly allotted name and symbol. He later visited Beldanga Police Station seeking protection and said assurances had been given regarding the safety of party workers.
