NANDIGRAM BYPOLL: SYMBOL FROZEN, CANDIDATE ARRESTED — WHAT IS HAPPENING? Nandigram’s October 6 bypoll has entered a dramatic new phase. ▪️The Election Commission has frozen the original TMC name and its traditional “flowers and grass” symbol amid a dispute between rival factions. The two camps have been assigned new names and symbols. Then came another twist. Mamata Banerjee’s faction’s candidate, Sanchita Pradhan Dey, withdrew from the contest after meeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Mamata subsequently announced support for Congress candidate Milan Pradhan. ▪️Within hours, Pradhan was arrested by West Bengal Police in connection with an old case linked to the 2007 Nandigram land-acquisition agitation. Congress and TMC leaders have questioned the timing and alleged political targeting. The authorities and rival political voices have disputed that interpretation. Congress leaders questioned the timing and alleged political vendetta.
