So many singers are in LOVE with one of our favorite voice exercises: trills. Trills work so well for our voice because they are one of the most famous examples of SOVT exercises: Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises. When we “semi-occlude”, or partially close, the front of our vocal tract (i.e., the mouth end of our vocal instrument), it causes the back end of our vocal tract (i.e., the vocal folds, or vocal “cords”) to relax a bit. The vocal folds come together in such a way as to minimize the “collision force” that brings them together when we speak or sing.
The partially closed lips in lip trills cause some of the air pressure to reflect backward toward the larynx, like a “cushion of air” going backward toward your throat. This “back pressure” above the vocal folds balances the force coming up from beneath your vocal folds, creating an optimal configuration of the vocal folds.
The sound waves move forward toward the lips, then some of them are reflected back toward the throat. The next puff of air coming upward sends those sound waves toward your lips again, and so on. This “self-sustaining oscillator” of sound is what gives you that wonderful buzzing tickling sensation in the front of your face, indicating a healthy vibrant vocal tone with reduced vocal effort. In other words, using trills to warm up your voice helps you to work less and get out a better sound!
Read more about it in our blog on trills https://provoicecare.net/whats-the-bu... and also on our favorite resource, Voice Science Works, where they have excellent explanations of SOVT exercises including trills, straw phonation, etc. (http://www.voicescienceworks.org/sovt...) .
