Walk back through the 1950s homes we didn't know we'd miss this much, one room at a time. Some kitchens even had a casserole dish made from the same material as a missile nose cone.
In many 1950s homes, Mamie Pink covered the bathroom, and a slot in the medicine cabinet dropped old razor blades inside the wall. The 1950s kitchen might have a Formica Boomerang counter, a GE refrigerator hung on the wall, and a 98 cent Swanson TV dinner. Brownie Wise sold Tupperware from living room sofas, the Fuller Brush Man rang the bell, and George Stephen built the Weber kettle from buoy halves.
Life in the 1950s for many families meant shoveling coal into a basement furnace, which heated about one American home in three in 1950. Then gas pipelines spread after the war, and within ten years coal heated only about one home in eight.
