Join me for a peaceful morning walk around Riddarholmen, the small historic island next to Stockholm’s Old Town.
This morning is a little unusual. The famous cast-iron spire of Riddarholmen Church is being dismantled for a major restoration, temporarily changing one of Stockholm’s most familiar silhouettes. A few journalists and curious onlookers have gathered to watch the work, but otherwise the island is quiet as usually.
Riddarholmen is one of the most historic parts of Stockholm, with palaces and public buildings reflecting centuries of Swedish history. At its heart stands Riddarholmen Church, one of Stockholm’s oldest surviving buildings and the burial church of many Swedish kings and queens.
The church dates back to the medieval Franciscan monastery established here in the 13th century. Its distinctive openwork cast-iron spire is much younger. After the previous wooden and copper-covered spire was destroyed by fire in 1835, the present Gothic Revival spire was erected in 1838–1840.
Now, almost two centuries later, the spire is being taken apart piece by piece. Its approximately 2,000 cast-iron components will be cleaned, repaired and eventually reassembled as part of a restoration scheduled to continue until 2028.
A quiet Stockholm morning where centuries of history meet an unusual moment in the life of the city.
