The Mezzotint by M. R. James | Classic Ghost Story for Sleep

The picture is the same every time you look away - and different every time you look back. M. R. James' quietly terrifying story about an engraving that seems to be telling its own story, frame by frame. A museum curator buys an unremarkable engraving of an old country house for his collection - ordinary, forgettable, until a colleague notices something in it that wasn't there before. Night after night, whenever no one is watching, the picture seems to change, one small detail at a time, telling a story no one wants to see finish. One of M. R. James' most ingenious ghost stories, built entirely around the horror of watching something happen too slowly to stop. M. R. James (1862-1936) published "The Mezzotint" in 1904 as part of More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. Its central idea - a picture that quietly changes over time - has influenced generations of horror writers since.
