India’s household gold wealth could become a major source of economic capital — but should it?
Veteran banker Uday Kotak has argued that Indians hold enormous wealth in gold, much of which functions primarily as a store of value rather than directly financing businesses or infrastructure. He has called for ways to channel more household gold wealth into productive economic use.
The debate comes at a time when India continues to face a substantial gold import bill. Kotak has estimated that India’s gold imports could reach around $88–90 billion in FY27, and has called for a broader approach to the country’s gold demand and external-account challenges.
Current reporting estimates that Indian households hold around 31,000 tonnes of gold, highlighting the enormous scale of wealth potentially sitting outside conventional financial assets.
But what would gold monetisation actually mean for ordinary Indian households?
Could household gold be converted into productive capital through gold loans, financial products, deposits, tokenisation or other regulated mechanisms?
Could it help fund businesses, infrastructure and investment?
And most importantly — should Indians be encouraged to put their physical gold to work, or is gold primarily a household safety net and store of wealth?
India already has a growing gold-backed lending ecosystem. RBI data cited in recent reporting shows rapid expansion in gold loans, while gold-backed credit has become an important source of secured borrowing.
There is also a wider discussion around the financialisation of gold. The RBI has reportedly been exploring the possibility of gold tokenisation within its financial-market infrastructure, although the regulatory and systemic implications remain under consideration.
In this video, we examine Uday Kotak’s gold proposal, India’s household gold wealth, gold monetisation, gold loans, India’s gold import bill, business financing, infrastructure funding and the larger question of whether dormant household wealth can contribute more directly to economic growth.
This is a policy and economic debate — not a recommendation for households to sell or pledge their gold.
