ISRO is building a major new space-surveillance capability in Assam. The foundation stone for an Advanced Radar Research Centre at Chandrapur, Assam, has been laid under Project NETRA — Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis. The facility is being developed through ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) and is aimed at strengthening India’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) capabilities. The proposed radar facility has been planned on a 67-acre site at Chandrapur. ISRO’s annual report confirms that the site has been identified for the NETRA radar facility, with land registration completed in November 2025. The radar is designed to detect and track objects as small as 10 centimetres at ranges of up to 2,000 kilometres, giving India an important additional capability for monitoring objects in space. But what exactly is Project NETRA? Why does India need advanced space surveillance? How can radar-based tracking help protect satellites and critical space assets?
