Three dives off Nusa Penida, in the Badung Strait south-east of Bali, on 24 August 2026: Crystal Bay, Manta Point, and a night dive on the north coast. The first two were family dives with my wife (Tascha) and daughter (Mira); the night dive I made on my own.
DIVE SITES
Dive 1 – Crystal Bay (west coast), 8:46 local time.
Dive 2 – Manta Point (south coast), 10:56 local time.
Night dive – Ped (north coast), 21:07 local time. Lots of current, and hardly any light: night diving isn't usually done here, so the guides had no spare lights.
Every bit of manta ray footage we shot has been kept in this film, which is why that part runs a little longer. It took me 171 dives to finally see these gentle giants gliding gracefully through the water, so more than memorable. The murky, greenish water is not bad visibility by chance: it comes from dense concentrations of plankton, the very food the mantas come here to feed on.
