This seminar introduces students to the meaning of health and disease and examines how diseases develop, spread and affect populations. Students will examine the WHO definition of health, discuss its strengths and limitations, and explore how ideas about disease causation have changed over time. The classroom component introduces the main measures used to describe disease occurrence, including prevalence, cumulative incidence and incidence density. Practical exercises will help students apply these concepts to population-health problems.
