A successful teacher. A championship debate coach. A functioning alcoholic whose life was falling apart behind the scenes. Cliff R. of Oceanside, California, shares his experience, strength, and hope at the 14th Daytona Roundup, held May 20, 2004, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Sober since January 13, 1970, Cliff had more than 34 years of sobriety when this recording was made. For 35 years, Cliff worked as a high school teacher in Oceanside, California, earning recognition for his successful speech and debate programs. He was also a devoted surfer, husband, and father of five. But in his other recorded A.A. talks, Cliff spoke openly about the painful contradiction of his life: professional success on the outside while alcoholism, resentment, and broken relationships were consuming him on the inside. His recovery began a transformation that extended far beyond putting down the drink. Through the Big Book, sponsorship, the Twelve Steps, and service to others, Cliff discovered a different way of living. And he brought a wonderful sense of humor to the experience. His earlier recordings reveal a speaker who could make an audience laugh while sharing difficult truths about alcoholism, family, surrender, and the importance of helping another alcoholic. Cliff remained active in Alcoholics Anonymous for the rest of his life, continuing to share his experience and support others until his passing in 2017.
