The Turks and Caicos Islands cover two hundred and thirty-eight square miles. The Turks and Caicos Islands also cover three hundred and sixty-six square miles.
Both figures are published. Both are correct. The only thing separating them is the tide.
Roughly a third of that country is there at low water and underwater at high water, twice a day, every day. Ask how big the nation is and the honest answer is a question back: when are you measuring? There is no single number you can write in the box on the form, because the line that defines the country will not stop moving long enough to be written down.
That is the smallest crack in a much bigger problem. The map of the Caribbean you carry in your head — islands in a tidy curve, sea a flat blue field between them — is wrong. Not vaguely wrong. Wrong in ways that are measured, published, and mostly never discussed.
Sixty facts, every one checked against a primary source.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE
— Why the tall islands and the flat islands are the same islands at different ages: Nevis at 985 metres, Anegada at eight and a half
— The highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is not in Europe and is a volcano
— Two eruptions on one plate boundary thirty-six hours apart in May 1902 — Saint Vincent's 1,680 dead, then Saint-Pierre's 29,000
— Dean's Blue Hole: 202 metres deep, thirty metres across at the surface, opening into a cavern underneath
— Dominica's Boiling Lake, first recorded by Watt and Nicholls, sitting in a valley named Desolation
— The border you can find in a satellite photograph without a map, and the number Blair Hedges attached to it in PNAS
— The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, which arrived in 2011 and never left
— Why "the Caribbean has over seven thousand islands" falls apart the moment you check it — Cuba alone counts 4,195 inside its own borders
Several claims repeated in almost every Caribbean facts video were cut during research because they do not survive contact with the record. Where the sources genuinely disagree, this video says so instead of picking the tidier number.
Stay for number forty-four. It is the one where a border visible from orbit turns out to have a measurement attached to it that almost nobody quotes.
