Bike trip to Zanskar Valley Ladakh with friends !!!
Episode 4 : Gombo Rangjon to Padum
A Zanskar Valley bike trip is one of the most rugged, remote, and rewarding Himalayan adventures. Typically spanning 10 to 11 days, the route takes riders through dramatic canyons, ancient monasteries, and high-altitude passes like Shinkula (16,580 ft) and Pensi La (14,435 ft).
Key Highlights & Places to Visit
Padum: The administrative heart of the Zanskar Valley . It serves as a necessary basecamp to refuel, rest, and arrange permits.
Phugtal Monastery: A 2,500-year-old honeycomb monastery built directly into a massive cliffside cave . It requires a scenic 2-hour hike from Purne .
Drang Drung Glacier: A massive, winding river of ice near Pensi La, and one of the largest glaciers accessible to riders .
Karsha & Stongdey Monasteries: Two of the largest monasteries in the region . Karsha is built on flat ground while Stongdey sits high on a hillock, both offering panoramic valley views.
Gonbo Rangjon: The “God’s Mountain”
Standing solitary at the base of the Shinku La Pass, Gonbo Rangjon is a massive , independent rock monolith that the locals consider sacred
Pensi La Pass (4,400m): The high-altitude gateway to Zanskar, providing sweeping views of twin alpine lakes (Ta Tso and Lang Tso).
Shinku La Pass: The gateway into Zanskar from the Lahaul/Manali side, marked by high peaks and remote campsites.
Quick Riding Tips
1. Acclimatization and Health
Take it slow: Zanskar lies at an average altitude of 3,650 meters (Padum) . Spend at least 2 to 3 days acclimatizing before ascending higher to avoid severe mountain sickness.
Hydrate & Meditate: Drink at least 3 liters of water a day . Carry preventive medications like Diamox (after consulting a doctor) and keep portable oxygen cans handy.
Listen to your body: If you start experiencing extreme headaches or fatigue, do not go any higher .
2. Fuel and Mechanics
Fuel up early: Fill your tank to the brim in Keylong/ Tandi . Petrol stations are sparse, and fuel availability in Padum can be limited .
Carry extra fuel: Always carry an extra 5-10 liters of reserve fuel in jerry cans.
Basic toolkit: The route features long stretches of off-road conditions . Make sure you carry spare tubes, throttle cables, puncture kits, and basic toolkits, and know how to fix minor issues yourself.
3. Weather and Terrain
Strict seasonal window: The roads to Zanskar are generally only open from mid-June to late September or early October, depending on snowfall .
Unpredictable weather: Weather conditions can change rapidly in the high passes, dropping temperatures significantly . Always carry thermal layers and waterproof rain gear .
Off-road readiness: Expect about 60% to 70% of the Zanskar stretch to consist of unpaved, rocky, or water-crossing routes , requiring an adventure bike with high ground clearance .
4. Logistics and Permits
Local travel rules: Note that while you might start your trip from Leh, local sightseeing in Zanskar around Padum strictly requires locally registered taxis .
Permits: Indian nationals usually do not require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Padum, but foreign nationals generally do . Always check the most current regulations with local authorities.
5. Packing Essentials
Clothing: Layering is key . Pack heavy thermals, windproof/waterproof riding jackets, and good riding gloves.
Sun protection: The UV rays at this altitude are harsh. Carry strong sunscreen, UV-protected sunglasses, and a good lip balm .
First Aid & Snacks: Carry a comprehensive first aid kit and plenty of energy bars, chocolates, and glucose.
Be prepared and stay safe!!!
