COURSE NOTES
Ballyneal Golf and Hunt Club - Summer Version
Ballyneal Golf Club is a private, authentic inland links golf destination located in Holyoke, Colorado, built on a unique sand dune formation in the high plains. The course is renowned for its minimalist style of play, which harkens to the traditions of the game in Ireland and Scotland, offering a laid-back ambiance combined with world-class golf.
The club was envisioned by Jim O’Neal, who recognized the local "chop hills" as reminiscent of the dunes where golf was born. It has received significant critical acclaim, including rankings such as #4 Best Modern Course and #36 Top 100 Courses in the USA according to Golf Digest. The experience emphasizes tradition, camaraderie, and the natural challenge of the land.

Ballyneal Golf Club Review

The course opens with a gentle handshake par 4 leaving that leaves the clubhouse and begins to send you out into the plains. Throughout the entirety of the course you navigate over, around, and between large sand dunes on the plains of eastern Colorado. The pace was fantastic, but not to the point where you feel rushed hitting every shot. Tees were mere steps away from greens, but not close enough to the point where you are worried about hitting the group in front of you.
Depending on the pin locations, each hole can play relatively forgiving, or require precision ball striking. Tom Doak had many of the greens portioned into sections of three or more, and course knowledge does become beneficial with many of the pin locations. There is rarely a blind shot of the pin or green from the fairway, but in many cases you are unable to see the intricacies of the green from the fairway, hence course knowledge being of importance.
The par threes were fantastic, none overbearing, and all extremely rewarding with a solid approach into the green. The par threes feature large bowls and funnels that present great scoring opportunities.
The par fours are a great mix of longer demanding holes, with a couple shorter risk reward opportunities. The scale of Ballyneal is massive, the ball stays in play on almost all shots no matter how errant due to the scale of the sand dunes, and the large fairways that flow through them.
The par fives are very playable, but if you do set yourself up for going in two, you better not miss. Doak wants you to truly think about the shot you are about to hit, and whether or not you will be better of laying back, or taking the risk.
The greens are extremely contoured, and large in scale. Due to the complexity of the greens they did not feel quick, and felt like a fair test due to their undulation. The course played dry, as you would imagine in the high plains, overall conditioning was rugged along the edges, but overall very well kept.
Similar to the scale of the course and greens, the bunkers were no different, the bunkers varied from small well placed pot bunkers, to expansive dunes that were merely apart of the landscape. Walking the dunes and hills of Ballyneal is no easy task, but as you come down the closing stretch you feel as if you are coming downhill into the village. As spectacular as the course and design of Ballyneal may be, the best part could be the laid back environment and people you meet while walking the par three course. We started an evening 9 as a group of four, and finished as a group of twelve before sitting by a firepit and watching the sun go down of the sand dunes in the distance.

Tom Doak was handed an incredible canvas in the eastern Colorado chop hills, and the sheer scale of the dunes here is unique. The routing fits naturally into the landscape, making the course feel discovered rather than manufactured.
The fescue fairways are kept firm and fast, which completely unlocks the strategic element of the design. It promotes a ton of creativity and enables you to play a ground game, using the slopes and micro-contours rather than just flying everything to the target.
The greens are massive. While they are relatively easy to hit, finding the putting surface guarantees absolutely nothing. The contours are bold, meaning a two-putt is never a given. You can use the heavy banking and side-slopes to feed shots to the hole. The bunkering is excellent and looks completely natural as if the wind blew the sand out over decades rather than being shaped by men.
My only real knock is that the holes tend to blend together. Even after playing it multiple times, I still find it difficult to mentally recall every single hole because the aesthetic and dune structures are so uniform throughout the loop.
