The Tunnel That’s Already Two Years Late

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is an 18-kilometre underwater tunnel being built between Denmark and Germany — using 89 enormous concrete elements instead of drilling underground. Each standard element is about 217 metres long and weighs roughly 73,500 tonnes. They are towed into the Baltic Sea and lowered into a seabed trench using the purpose-built IVY immersion vessel. But the project is already around two years behind schedule, with challenges involving IVY contributing to the delay.
